Hunting Trip to La Grande

Isaac has been wanting to go hunting for years and has finally gotten the opportunity of a lifetime. My Uncle Joe has been hunting since he was a kid and when Isaac approached him this last summer to see if he would be interested in taking a rookie along, Uncle Joe said 'yes'. Now, because I'm not working, Jacob and I were also able to come along and stay at my Aunt and Uncle's home in La Grande while the men folk trudged through the wilderness looking for a spike elk.

Friday, Joe took Isaac out for some rifle practice plus safety lessons. Isaac did great! Has a great aim and a keen sense of gun safety. Isaac came back from his lessons and his eyes sparkled with excitement of the upcoming hunt.

Saturday (opening day for spike elk season), the men were up early (as well as Jacob). They spent the day trudging through brush, trees, sliding down slippery slopes, looking for tracks, and checking out the freshness of elk waste. They did see a grouse, but not elk. Jacob wore his camo fleece for the day, so he could join the hunt in his own little way.

Sunday, the men headed out in the afternoon to find the elk, and be in the wilderness for sunset. They came home, with no such luck, but did enjoy the romp. Aunt Patty cooked an amazing meal of lemon sole, roasted vegetables, chive and cream cheese biscuits, and mango kiwi salad. Isaac and Joe made their plans for the next days hunt.

Monday, another early morning for the guys . . . they are off hunting right now. We sure hope they see some elk today. If they don't fill their elk tag today, they may go out again tomorrow. We'll see. In the meantime, I will start researching recipes for cooking elk roast in the crock pot . . . or, maybe not.
